T-Mobile G1 Cell Phone Review

T-Mobile G1 Cell Phone Review

When you first see the G1 in a shop window, it’s easy to overlook it. It appears to be just another one of the competent but bland series of cell phones that HTC produces on such a regular basis. But to overlook the phone would be a big mistake. Users are not going to love this phone for the way it looks, but for what it does.

This is the first phone to use the Google Android operating system. Use this phone for 10 minutes and you will not just fall in love with it but realize that its one of the best designed phones on the market. And a phone that, thanks to the Android OS, you can tweak and personalize a lot.

When you boot the phone for the first time, the android figure appears on the screen with instructions to touch the figure to begin. Once you do that the subsequent screens are a clear and easy to follow set up process. The phone will ask you for your Google account details so it can synchronize your web based calendar, contacts and email with the phone. If you do not have a Google account you can create one from the phone itself. Once the syncing is complete all your Google data is available to you on the phone.

Once our set up is done you can explore the tweaking and personalization opportunities the Android OS provides you. The Android interface has been clearly influenced by Google’s simple and direct web design and is easy to use. Every application and function on the phone can be tweaked either by using the correct apps or by going through the deep and detailed setting options.

The home screen consists of a favorite’s icon, an analog clock and dialer (phone) contacts, maps and browser icons. An icon is selected by pressing down on it for a moment after which the phone will vibrate to indicate that the application has been selected and then the icon will be released so you can move on to selecting other applications.

Swipe your finger across the home screen and the wallpaper unrolls into the second home screen which has the Google search bar along with the other application icons which are arranged in alphabetical order which may not suit you but which can be easily changed. Besides the applications that come with the phone, there is a huge array of others that you can download and added to your phone.

Spend a day with the G1 and you won’t want to go back to any other smart phone or PDA. The Android OS is just too much fun and too easy to use. There are some drawbacks like the shape of the keys (too flat) and the track ball sensitivity. But these are really matters of personal preference. The main drawback of the phone is that just by looking at it no one will get an idea of how good it is and how advanced the Android OS really is. If only the package matched the contents.

Price: $179 with a two year contract with T-Mobile.
