Canon Pixma MP620 Printer Review

Actually, the Canon Pixma MP620 is much more than a printer; it’s an all in one machine that combines printing, scanning and copying along with a few other features with a small footprint and a price of $150.

Weighing in at about 18 pounds and with dimensions of 14.5 x 17.7 x 6.9 inches, it can easily fit onto a small SOHO area. With a sleek and modern look and clean lines, it should fit into any office or home décor without any problems. The two paper trays – the one in front for regular paper and the a rear tray for glossy / photographic paper fold in to save space when the printer is not in use.

The top of the unit houses a 2.5 inch pop up LCD and control panel. The LCD is clear and easy to read and the control panel with the usual arrow keys, power, color and other standard buttons is easy to use.

Getting started with the MP620 is not difficult. Except for the print head and ink cartridge, the printer is delivered in a fully assembled state and what little you have to do to get it ready for operation is quickly explained in an easy to understand instruction manual. Depending on what your requirements are and the number of computer in use, the MP620 can be configured to work on either a wired or wireless LAN. After the configuration has been decided upon, the setup CD does the rest of the work for you, after which you are ready to load the paper and beginning printing.

The printer works with a variety of paper types and sizes. The two paper trays are a useful feature since different types of paper can be kept ready yet segregated to prevent waste by accidental printing on the wrong paper. The printer can churn out 27 pages of black and white text a minute and 3 plus pages of color, depending on the amount of color and non text material to be printed.

Photo quality printing is excellent and unlike many other printers the print quality does no drop when larger papers sized are used.

The scanning and copying functions also work well with a color copy taking about 24 seconds. The lid has a flexible hinge to allow for books. A useful feature is the frame erase function that removes the black border near the binding that often appears on copies taken from a book or other thick document. Various copying options such a borderless copies and up to 4 on 1 copies are available.

Besides saving scans on a PC, the MP620 has SUB and memory card slots to allow media to be directly saved on these devices.

This is a top class multi function unit for just about any small office or home application. It’s simple to use, reliable and the quality of the prints, scans and copies are comparable with more expensive printers. The only quibble is why a fax feature has been left out. It would have been worth paying a bit more for this, had it been available.
